Water birds

I've been trying to photograph the osprey all spring/summer. There are nesting boxes built all over the place in the Rideau Ferry area but every time I'm there no one happens to be sitting on them. I lucked out and came across this guy today. It's difficult to grasp how big they are from a photo but in case you're interested they can be as tall as 2' with a wingspan of 6'; definitely not a small bird/raptor. I'm happy to have found him today.

Also, this loon decided to fish in the shallow water just off the dock so I spent some time snapping shots of him when he wasn't underwater. I particularly love the second shot because it demonstrates their gorgeous markings (check out his neck) but you can also see water droplets on his head from his fishing expedition :)

Lotion

More shots from last night....

The French Riviera martinis (formerly known as the Jenn-tini) come with a cherry...

This bag was sitting all by itself; I had 2 options....photograph it so I could remember its beauty or bring it home with me....I opted for the former.... :)

A SPECTACULAR jazz band was playing on the patio; their name is Lotion (hence the title of thsi post). They played three sets and we were sorry to see them stop. There wasn't a song we weren't excited to hear!

Drummer Matt.....we like him....

Meet Evelin (if you don't already know her of course!); I tell you, this girl couldn't take a bad photo if she rolled her eyes back in her head and stuck her tongue out. She's one of the most photogenic people I know!

'Shades' of reflections

I spent the evening on the patio at the Metropolitain Brasserie in Ottawa tonight, celebrating a milestone exam for Brigitte, with friends and colleagues. Of course I had my camera with me....
I'll post some more from the evening tomorrow but for now I thought I'd post some shots of Craig's amazingly reflective sunglasses. There was a wonderful jazz band - Lotion - playing on the patio and you can see them in both shots. I like the second one because the band is visible in one lens and some friends are story-telling in the other :)
Congrats Brigitte! You can have your life back now!

Building a fence is fun....ya right.

It's fence-building season! We're working on our first-ever fence and we're learning it's a lot more work than we initially expected. Our new neighbour got a great deal on cedar and we've been digging post holes through the ROCKY ground since last Saturday; and we're only half done. *sigh*
Anyway, the first photo is what the back yard currently looks like; now that I've shown it I suppose I'll have to update you as we go.....

This second shot doesn't even come close to doing justice to the actual size of that boulder....yes, a boulder, not merely a rock. It was about 2.5' down, directly in the centre of one of our post holes so we had no choice but to try to remove it. Brannon got really frustrated and quit so I decided I'd take a little garden shovel (one of those hand-held thingies) and do my best to dig as much of the dirt away that was surrounding it. We got to a point where we were able to jiggle it with the use of a crow bar but we could not budge it. Once our neighbour got home the guys took to it again, rigged up a pulley system of sorts and managed to get the darn thing out of the hole. It weighs about 50 lbs!!!! You can see how big it is next to the ball cap on the ground and the shovel in the back. It's monstrous and I have horribly painful blisters.......
Regardless, we survived fence-building adventure #1! Hopefully the rest will be "lighter".

Wine, flowers, and a lamp

A sunflower to represent the beautiful day we had today! My reward for a hard day's work outside digging post holes....really, I did that and I have blisters on my hands to prove it.
I bought this (2 of them actually) yesterday and thought I'd get some opinions. I found a great sale, we don't have lamps yet (or much furntiture actually), and the brushed nickel will go with all the stainless steel stuff we have. I haven't taken the plastic off the shades yet, just in case I wind up returning them. Don't think so though because I really like them...

Michaela

This is Michaela; her parents live down the street and I took these through my bedroom window; I have become such a stalker! :)
Anyway, Michaela and her mom came home the other day (as I was stalking another family who was walking down the street) and she ran ahead of her mom to open the door. When she couldn't turn the handle (it was locked)....

....she thought maybe hanging off the door and kicking it might help! It didn't. I would have been able to catch her tantrum....err....reaction had our doorbell not rang.
Who was at the door you might ask? The florist was delivering some anniversary flowers. You might think "oh, what a nice husband"......but no, once again the "special occasion" flowers were from my mom. Anyone else seeing a pattern here?!?!?!
It took me an hour to dig out a vase (do you think I could remember where it was packed?!?!) but I finally did so here's a shot for my mom, it's probably the most multi-coloured bouquet I have ever seen and it looks lovely in my kitchen! Thanks Mom!
I should also note that Brannon's parents gave us a little (big) something as well. From them we received a great new cooler AND it contained drinks....our favourites (beer for Brannon and new pomegranite coolers for me)! It seems the wedding stuff just never ends! :)

When Brannon got home from work around 8:30 pm, we spent the rest of the evening outside with our new neighbours digging post holes for our new fence (well, the guys worked while Marsha and I oversaw everything to make sure they were doing it right!! *wink wink*). How romantic huh??? What's nice though is that we're starting to get to know people around here....yay!

We made it!

We've hit our first anniversary! I thought the year preceding the wedding went by quickly but this last year has really flown! Thank goodness the weather was better *last* June 23 because it's miserable today! I didn't take any photos today and I don't really plan to so I thought I'd post some "couple pics" in honour of our day; as if you haven't seen them enough already! LOL
Oh well, you'll have to suck it up!! These obviously were not taken by me, they were taken by our wedding photographer, Andrew Van Beek (you can visit his blog by clicking on the link on the right side of the page). None of my favourite shots from the day are posed shots like these but I thought these were most appropriate!
~~Happy anniversary to us~~

I love this one; it's not really your typical wedding shot but I love how we're both about to fall over in laughter....it probably had something to do with the homeless dude who was harassing us during these photos. Good times!

Don't get stuck!

This is slightly better than my first attempt at photographing spider webs; this time I had the sun to use to make the web look more obvious.

2008 NHL Hockey Draft (round one)

I attended the 2008 NHL Entry Draft here in Ottawa last night. If you didn't already know, I'm a huge hockey fan. These definitely aren't the best photos I've taken but I am so happy with them regardless. We had 300-level seats so I was really far away from the action and I learned how hard it is to shoot in low light, from a great distance, with a manual rather than automatic-focus lens (70-300mm). I took 400+ photos and while I *thought* everything was in focus while I was shooting away, the vast majority were not and many were blurry because of my unsteady hand. Here are some representative shots; there are lots more and I'll probably put them on facebook if you're interested. I was definitely star-struck.

Lots of fun was had outside before the draft actually began. Those Buffalo Sabres fans.....

Some of the highest ranked prospects were outside signing autographs before everything got started. You had to get there really early to get in line for that - and we didn't - so I did my best to shoot through the masses. This is Luke Schenn who played for the Kelowna Rockets and whom is originally from Saskatoon so some of you may know about him. He was chosen fifth overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs which, while he has the most beautiful blue eyes (can't see them here though), means that I can't be a fan of his because I am, of course, a Senators fan :)
This is Drew Doughty who played for the Guelph Storm in the OHL. He was selected second overall by the L.A. Kings.

The highlight of the night - BY FAR - for me was the opportunity to meet NHL legend Bobby Orr. He was sitting in a box just beneath us and was only too happy to sign some autographs. Not only did he sign my jersey (AND it's legible!) but he was happy to let me bud in line to do it (haha) and he gave me a nice shoulder squeeze too.....am I too old/too cool to say I'm never washing my sweater or my shoulder again?!?!?! LOL

The majority of the evening's excitement was reserved for Steven Stamkos of the Sarnia Sting. He's been long-expected to be drafted No.1. Here he's being interviewed by a TSN reporter; it might be Jennifer Hedger but I can't be sure from this angle.

He was , in fact, drafted first overall (to the Tampa Bay Lightning) and here he's getting a bear hug from a friend/family member.
Here Stamkos is again on the stage with the big-wigs of the Lightning, getting all dressed up in his new sweater!

As I mentioned before Drew Doughty was chosen second overall.
This next photo is merely for Brannon; he's a Philadelphia Flyers fan and an even bigger fan of their General Manager (and former player), Bobby Clark (yellow tie).

Each player shook hands with Gary Bettman, the NHL Commissioner, as they were chosen and made their way to the stage.
This was a late draft choice of the Minnesota Wild (No. 23) but the player, Tyler Cuma plays for the Ottawa 67's so I just had to post this one.
You probably don't need an explanation for this next one but, of couse, Wayne Gretzky was in da house.....
I thought you west coast Ladies might appreciate a quick shot of the Canucks pick, Cody Hodgson as he's making his way over to be interviewed by TSN's James Duthie.
....and if you're from Edmonton then you'll be happy to meet Jordan Eberle.....
....and of course, if you like the Calgary Flames then you should meet Greg Nemisz. FYI to the east coasters, the Habs traded their draft pick ....
Daniel Alfredsson (I love him!) made the pick announcement for my Ottawa Senators; here he's standing with Sens owner Eugene Melnick and NHL commissioner, Gary Bettman. They drafted Sweden's Erik Karlsson.
I was seated practically beside the stage (only up high) so it was often difficult to see the sweaters on the players because they faced straight ahead; finally I got a good shot of one, Joe Colborne. So, I think that's the most photos I've ever posted in one entry before. If you're still here, thanks for reading! I got at least a shot of each of the first 30 picks but I couldn't possibly post them *all*.... :)

Purple

This guy finally sat still (do bees sit??) long enough for me to get a half-decent shot - this was taken in Brannon's mom's bed of wild flowers. I love the combination of yellow and purple!

This flower is just about done but I loved the petal pattern and the colours!

Quiet serenity

I LOVE hangin' out on the dock, especially in the morning. There's no nicer view to wake up to (yup, when I visit my parents this is what's outside of the patio door in the guest bedroom) or enjoy whilst drinking a cup of coffee (or vino if we're talkin' about later on in the day!). I try to spend as much time as possible here in the summer; I've only been twice so far this spring/summer but plan to make a few return visits! I love my new house but I still love theirs more...haha....maybe Stacie (my younger sister) has the right idea..... :)

Even the damselflies enjoy the experience!

Perfect Pink Peonies

In honour of our first wedding anniversary that's coming up next Monday I thought I'd post some photos of the peonies I shot this past weekend. They are hands-down my favourite flowers (except for the dumb ants that seem to always come with....) and I'm sure I've mentioned before that we used them for our wedding.
These first photos were taken in my mother's garden; strangely, I've never seen another peony that looks like these which is probably why I like them so much.

I really love this one, the vibrant colours (thanks to the sun!) and the perspective. I can't take credit for the set-up of this photo though, that I owe to my mom. She's always taking pictures while trying to get the lake in the background so I kinda stole her idea...haha....I'm sure she won't mind. I actually think she got the idea from our wedding photographer last year.....

This next one was taken at Brannon's mom's house. Her peonies are all of this deep magenta variety and I think they're my favourites of all.
